Main manufacturing sectors of the Iasi county are food & drinks industry, machine building industry, electrical power industry, textiles, metallurgy, forestry and furni-ture industry, constructions, electronic industry, tourism, transportation and others.
Agriculture represents the second main branch in the economy of the Iasi county and gives around 3 % of Romania 's total agricultural production. The favorable soil and the climate conditions encourage maize culture ( about 32% of the lands ), cereals ( wheat, barley, oat, rye - 15% ), patties (15%), vegetables (10%), industrial vegetables (flax and hemp - 35% ), together with orchards, vines, pisciculture.
Horned cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry are predominant in the sector of animal breeding. Agricultural years of 1995 and 1996 witness very good results in the production of cereal, vegetable, fruit and meat.
Iasi County has important capacities for processing meat, milk, beet, vegetables, fruit, grinding mills and factories to produce comestible oil, cigarettes, wine, beer and spirit as well as animal food.
Vineyards and vine products of Iasi County are famous around the world. Many of the vines produced here are gold awarded at international contests and are distributed around the world at very competitive prices.
Total number of the registered companies in Iasi county was 17,808 at 12/31/1996: 24 autonomous regies; 15,321 limited liability companies, 780 joint stock companies; 1,707 other types of business organization. Regarding the legal form of business organization, in the Iasi county, over 90% from the total registered companies are private companies.
